Posts: 404 | Indy told me $800 to replace condenser & drier ??? Indy told me $800 to replace condenser & drier ??? Have had the car since I bought it new in 2000. Have not had dealership or an Indy do any work on my car for over 8 years, so, I have little idea of what a fair price is these days. A/C is out, and an Indy today told me $800 to replace condenser & drier and get A/C running again. Questions: 1. What would a dealer charge for this job ? 2. Is this $800 a good deal, a bad deal, or what ? Thanks __________________ CLK430 Cabriolet, bought it new in year 2000, Chassis# W208, Trans#722.623, Engine #113.943 | | | Sponsored Links | Advertisement

Second do some searches to get quotes on those parts. Then you can calculate the labor he's charging. That in turn gives you ammo to go shopping for other quotes. I don't know if that's a fair quote or not but as you know it's pretty tight in the engine bay of a 430. More than likely they are using aftermarket parts which are ok but not genuine mercedes and might be lesser quality. There are driers that are 35 to 90 and condensers that are about 215 on GermanAutoparts.com Are they any good - don't know and I wouldn't risk it. Will take more than 3-4 hours to do it properly being you have to pull several things, do a complete evac and flush (may not be necessary but a good idea if it was leaking) and then under vacuum recharge which takes a little amount of time. Good idea to maybe replace some of the o-rings as well. Test for leaks. His price is too low to do a decent job and at that price he is def using aftermarket. Dealer will charge about 1100 or more depending on the extras involved. MB dealerships charge about 125-135 per hour and they generally use that ALLDATA system for estimates. You may try a AC/Radiator specialist that only does AC/cooling systems. If you INSIST on genuine parts I'd go that route because more than likely they are subs to a dealer. They also use the ALLDATA system for estimates but their hourly rate is more than likely less than the dealership so you save on the hourly rate but not the parts unless you go the non genuine route. Unless it is a decent sized dealership they farm out to subs to do the AC stuff which isn't bad because that is all they do but most will not touch anything to do with the electronics. An independent might have a set a gauges and a vac (maybe) but are they qualified to do the job properly - are they clean and make sure all the openings to the system are plugged when they disconnect to keep the system clean? AC guys will do this and insure the pressures are correct when charging - most "generalists" won't and send you off with either a uncharged or slightly overcharged system which won't cool properly. They also will get crap into the system and tell you a week later that the compressor is going (which is really the result of crap entering the system).
