How much fouling thickness causes how much condenser vacuum ...

Home » How much fouling thickness causes how much condenser vacuum pressure?

Q: Is there any mathematical relationship between fouling thickness on the cooling water side and steam turbine condenser vacuum pressure? Actually what I'm wondering is how much fouling thickness causes how much condenser vacuum pressure. For example, assume that the fouling thickness is 0.35 mm of silicate deposit on the cooling water side, what happen the condenser pressure?

A: I am not familiar with steam turbine condensers; however a silicate deposit on the tubes will have a significant effect on the heat transfer in this case.  The cooling water and condensing steam heat transfer coefficients are quite large and any additional resistance, like scale, will reduce the effectiveness of the exchanger.  This is also likely to result in higher pressure drop on the condensing side, increasing the condenser pressure.

Do I need to make a stainless steel exchanger bigger?
I am considering using a stainless-steel shell-and-tube heat exchanger (water - water) in the place of a copper one. Do I need to make the stainless steel exchanger bigger? If so, is there a rough ratio I need to make it bigger by?
